Homophones – Words that Sound the Same

For example:

their - there - they’re

The pronunciation of all 3 words is exactly the same (= /ðeər/). However, the meaning and function within a sentence is different.

their: This is their car, not mine. (= possessive adjective)

there: The party is at Laura’s house. How do we get there? (= adverb)

they’re: Are Sam & Anna here? Not yet, they’re coming later. (pronoun + verb ‘are’)
