This video teaches you how to form and produce the diphthong /eɪ/. Diphthongs are also called double vowel sounds because they are a combination of two monophthongs (= two single vowel sounds).
In the diphthong /eɪ/ the close-mid front unrounded vowel sound /e/ combines with the near-close front unrounded vowel /ɪ/. We glide from one sound to the next in smooth movement to form a new sound: the diphthong /eɪ/.
This diphthong is a very common sound in English, and you can find it in many words. For example, make, they, away, train, break and eight. However, as you can see, unfortunately /eɪ/ is not always spelt in the same way. Instead, there are many different spelling patterns! Learn all about the different spelling patterns and how to pronounce this sound correctly. At the end of the video, you can also test yourself!
