In this video we are going to have a look at consonant clusters, also called consonant compounds or consonant blends. Consonant clusters are strings on consonant sounds next to one another without a vowel sound in between.
The rules of phonotactics decide how consonants can be combined in a language. First, we are going to have a look at the rules of phonotactics in English for initial consonant clusters (= onset clusters). These occur at the beginning of a word.
Next, we are going to have a look at final consonant clusters (= coda clusters) at the end of words. We will go over the most common clusters, and we will have a chance to practise your pronunciation. If you would like to practise more, have a look at my series of 9 YouTube shorts videos with more pronunciation practice on consonant clusters!
