In this video we are going to have a look at word stress in English. It is important to know which part, or better which syllable, in a word is more prominent so that the word sounds right and so that people understand it when we say it.
You will learn that only one syllable in a word is stressed (= carries the primary stress) and we will look at examples so you can see that a stressed syllable is: 1. longer, 2. louder, 3. has a change in pitch, 4. is easier to hear and 5. results in larger facial movements.
We will go over multiple examples and you will also learn how to recognise word stress in the phonemic transcript in dictionaries.
