Transcribing Connected Speech in IPA – Part 2

In this second video on transcribing, we are going to transcribe the following utterance using IPA:

‘At the moment I am a waitress and I live in Barcelona. Next year I want to go on and train to become a top chef.’

In natural, fast speech this utterance contains several features of connected speech, such as:

  • Weak forms
  • Linking j & w
  • Linking r
  • Assimilation
  • Elision
  • Aspirated t
  • General linking

We will go over each feature in detail, and you will learn how to show these features when transcribing what someone says. At the end, we are also going to look at the sentence stress in this utterance. I use the phonemic chart for British English in this video because this resembles my accent more than American English.
