Introduction to Intonation in English

In this video you will get an overview of intonation in English – a feature of pronunciation. Intonation describes the change in pitch as we speak.

Pitch describes the highness and lowness of our speaking voice. We use intonation to express meaning (grammatical functions) and attitude.

Did you know you are sending a message through your intonation whether you want it or not? Even the little word ‘Hello’ can be said in many different ways using a range of intonational patterns – all with a different meaning! Find out more about how we use our voice to convey a message to our listeners in this first video on intonation.
