IPA Diacritics & Suprasegmentals in Phonemic Transcription

In this video we are going to have a look at some extra symbols from the IPA that we often use when transcribing in IPA. You have probably noticed them before,

e.g. in the word ‘extraordinary’ or transcribed as:

/ɪkˈstrɔː.dɪn.ər.i/

It’s all the funny little symbols – apart from the sound symbols – that I’m talking about. They can be put into 2 groups: suprasegmentals & diacritics. In this video we are going to have a look at the most common one that you will need when transcribing in English.
