Intonation in English: What is pitch?

In this video we are going to have a look at pitch.

Pitch describes the highness and lowness of our voice. It is the frequency of vibrations of our vocal cords per second and is measured in Hertz (Hz). So a sound with high frequency is a sound with high pitch and will be perceived by our ear as a high tone.

In comparison, volume describes how loud or quiet a sound is. Don’t confuse these two with one another!

The thickness, length and tension of our vocal cords influence the pitch we can produce. In general, the pitch range of a typical adult man is much lower than that of a woman, and definitely a lot lower than that of a child. When we speak in a neutral manner, we call this our modal pitch. I’ll also share a few fun facts about pitch throughout the video and you’ll discover who the man with the lowest voice is.
