This video will give you a quick overview of the 24 sounds in English:
- 6 plosives
- 9 fricatives
- 2 affricates
- 3 nasals
- 4 approximants
We have a look at how they are arranged on the phonemic chart in three rows. Sounds on the left are produced at the front of the mouth, like /f/, /p/ and /m/. And sounds on the right side of the chart are produced towards the back of the mouth, like /g/.
You will learn what makes each of those groups of consonant sounds special and also which of the 24 consonant sounds are voiced (= produced using our vocal cords) and which ones are voiceless.
