Can you pronounce these 10 UK place names?

You know by now how confusing English spelling can be! Often words are spelt very differently to their pronunciation, containing many silent letters. This is especially true for place names in England.

In this video we are going to learn how to pronounce 10 of the most difficult ones:

1. Leicester

2. Plymouth

3. Greenwich

4. Durham

5. Worcestershire

6. Cholmondeley

7. Loughborough

8. Bicester

9. The Thames

10. The Mall

The last two aren’t exactly places but rather a river & a street. But they can be tricky to pronounce as well!

Number 10 is a famous ceremonial street in London. If you have ever watched any big celebration involving the Royal Family, you will probably have seen part of this street on television. The pronunciation can even be confusing for American speakers because it looks like ‘shopping mall’ – but, alas, it is not pronounced this way! Watch the video to find out how to say the name of this London street correctly.
