Words with a Silent L in English

In todayโ€™s video, weโ€™re learning about the silent L in English words. Youโ€™ll find that in many common words, the L appears in writing but is not pronounced when you speak. It is completely silent!

Here is an example of a word you definitely know:

Indeed, the L is not pronounced at all! Instead, we simply say /wษ”หk/. We move from the vowel sound directly to the /k/ sound – there is no L in between.

Here are some more examples: In words like talk, calm, would and could the letter L is also completely silent.ย

Similarly, salmon and almond also have a silent L.

In this video, we will practise both, common words and short sentences featuring silent L sounds. Be sure to repeat the words and sentences after me to get comfortable with them.

Understanding and using these silent L words correctly can make your English sound more natural. Pay attention to the words with silent letters and practise saying them out loud regularly.
