English pronunciation can be difficult, especially when the same letter produces different sounds. One common challenge is the pronunciation of the letter G, which has two distinct sounds: the soft G (/dΚ/) and the hard G (/g/). Knowing when to use each one will improve both your pronunciation and your confidence in speaking English.
The Soft G: /dΚ/
The soft G sounds like the “J” sound in “jump.” This occurs when the letter G is followed by the vowels E, I, or Y. Here are some common examples:
- Gem /dΚΙm/
- Giant /ΛdΚaΙͺΙnt/
- Gym /dΚΙͺm/
These words show that when G is followed by E, I, or Y, it usually has the soft G sound.
More Examples:
- Gentle, Giraffe, Genius
Try saying these words out loud, focusing on the /dΚ/ sound.
The Hard G: /g/
The hard G sounds like the “G” in “go.” It appears when G is followed by A, O, U, or a consonant. Here are some examples:
- Game /Ι‘eΙͺm/
- Goat /Ι‘oΚt/
- Gum /Ι‘Κm/
- Green /gri:n/
More Examples:
- Garden, Gold, Glove
